Here in the internet age it’s quite easy to find information on pretty much anything. If there’s something we want to learn, a quick Google search will turn up thousands of results.

With information overload, it’s tempting to keep consuming information without really putting anything useful into practice. What’s the point of all the learning if we can’t use at least some of it in everyday life?

Do you ever feel conflicted between learning and doing?

Learning and Doing

Pinterest has links to amazing recipes and time saving tips, but are we using any of them? How do we find the delicate balance in between learning and actually doing?

I love learning. I get so caught up in it that I sometimes forget to put it into practice. Especially when it comes to blogging and online business. I could read up on all sorts of social media and email marketing tips but if I never use and of them and never measure results, then it’s not going to help me much.

Here are some ways to balance learning and doing:

Limit learning resources

Try to stick to just a few resources at a time for learning on a particular subject. Otherwise it’s too easy to get very overwhelmed by the different thought processes, strategies, etc. By just sticking to a couple, you’re able to apply what you learn, measure results, and figure out if it’s something that works for you or not.

This can also be applied to other areas of life. I know it’s SO easy for me to get caught up reading news stories of things I don’t need to know. I do think it’s important to be informed (I wrote for the teen section of the local newspaper in high school – it’s embedded in my brain that I’ll always keep up with current events in some way). These days it’s so easy to get information overload, though.

Have time set aside for application

Schedule some time just for applying what you’ve learned. If you’re a blogger, maybe it’s setting up a new social media strategy or sitting down to write out some blog posts.

If it’s for your home, you could take the time to make a new cleaning schedule and complete the tasks for the day. Or maybe you’ll make a menu plan and write out the grocery list.

Focus on one or the other

If you’re still feeling overwhelmed, take some time to just focus on one.

Maybe you need to focus on learning and finding new ideas. You could work your way through a few books, taking notes on what you’d like to implement.

Or if it’s time for you to put your focus on execution, put the books away, delete the extra emails, and block out the “noise” while you focus on putting into practice what you’ve learned so far. You can measure results from there to see if that strategy works for you or if it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

Though it will take some work being intentional about how you’re spending time, finding the balance between “learning” and “doing” will bring a lot of benefit to your life in the long run.
