I thought I would share how we’re putting together our morning routine. It’s not quite all polished, there are still some things we’re working towards. But that’s real life and if you’ve been around here for a while, you know that’s kind of the whole point.
A little context if you’re new: I’m a homeschooling mom of three boys — ages 9, 5, and 1. So our mornings have a lot of moving parts. There’s a lot of energy. And sometimes a lot of noise.
Here’s what I try to work into our mornings, even if it doesn’t always happen in perfect order:

Mindset. Nutrition. A chore. Some movement.
Those four things are my loose anchors. Not a rigid schedule… just a general direction for the morning.
How It Actually Starts
My first priority in the morning is coffee and a few minutes to plan my day. I also try to fit in some devotional time during that window. I’ve found that starting with that quiet, intentional moment really does set a different tone for the rest of the day. It doesn’t have to be long. It just has to happen first.
While I’m doing that, the boys either come cuddle for a bit, play, or have some screen time. That’s real. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.
Breakfast
What we’ve landed on that actually works: eggs and hash browns.
I noticed that our days go noticeably better when everyone starts with some protein. Less crankiness. Better focus for school. So that’s our go-to. But I also keep Greek yogurt and chicken sausage on hand, and sometimes I’ll make pancakes. And sometimes… it’s a frozen waffle and that’s completely fine.
One thing I’d like to work toward is combining breakfast with morning time — kind of doing a read-aloud or Bible lesson while we eat. We’re not quite there yet, but it’s on my radar.
Getting Ready and a Morning Chore
Once everyone’s fed and dressed, we try to get a load of laundry started before my husband leaves for work. That one small task makes such a difference by afternoon. It’s one of those tiny rhythms that just quietly keeps the house from getting buried.
Then we aim to start school somewhere between 8 and 9.
Morning Group Time (School)
Our first school block is what I think of as the “everyone together” batch. We do:
- Bible (we use a Bible app and cards, and I’d like to add in verse memory)
- History
- Science
- States
That group time pulls everyone into the same space and the same rhythm, which I really love. It gives the morning a sense of togetherness before everyone goes their own direction.
Free Time
After that first school block, we break for free time. If my youngest goes down for a nap, the older boys get some space to just… play. Unstructured time is something I really try to protect. But if he doesn’t nap, we usually move into something a little more intentional, like a baking project, getting out the play doh, or going outside if the weather is cooperating.
By this point it’s usually somewhere between 11 and noon. We clean up, get lunch prepped, and settle into rest time if the toddler still needs it.
What I’m Working Toward
Our morning isn’t finished being figured out. I still want to smooth out the breakfast-to-morning-time transition and get more consistent with verse memory. But what we have right now is working well enough that our days feel grounded, and that counts for a lot.
If your morning looks nothing like this, that’s okay. The goal was never to copy someone else’s routine. It was to build one that fits your family, your kids, and your actual life.
That’s what we’re doing too… one small step at a time.
