Ever feel overwhelmed with managing your home?
I do. It can get crazy at times trying to keep track of things like cleaning, laundry, meal planning, etc.
But one change has made things a lot more simple for me.
Enter: My homemaking spreadsheet.
“Don’t you mean binder?” you might be wondering. Well, I’m really not a fan of bulky binders. In fact, I recently emptied nearly all of my binders in favor of file folders.
So I replaced everything typically found in a home management binder with a spreadsheet. Each tab represents a different “section.”
Now, these tabs can easily be customized to suit your own needs, but these are the categories that I thought would be useful.
Make a Schedule That Works
The first tab is where I store my ideal schedule for the week. I have things color coded for work, home, blogging, family time, etc.
Meal Planning Made Simple
Each week you can type in your meal plan right into the spreadsheet. Keep it there for easy reference or print and attach to the fridge so your family knows the answer to “What’s for dinner?”
Keep Track of Who You Know
The next tab is your basic contact tracker. Much easier than flipping through an address book. After you finally find it.
Happy Birthday to…?
There’s space for birthdays and anniversaries in the contacts tab, but I thought it would be nice to have a dedicated space where you can easily see whose birthday or anniversary is in the month.
You Gotta Buy Food at Some Point
The next tab is a grocery list. There’s formulas built to add up your totals, including tax. You can also split it up by store.
Know What You Have on Hand
Next is the freezer and pantry inventory. I don’t know about you, but I tend to forget what I have on hand if I don’t have it documented. Though it’s kind of a pain to do an inventory, it really does cut down on costs and eliminates waste.
Meals We Heart
Sometimes I get stuck meal planning and need to reference this sheet on our favorite meals. I can easily add new meals as I think of them or we try new things that become favorites.
Furry Family Members
I keep track on our pet’s records on this tab. There’s space for vet info, allergies, shots, and more.
Home Projects
Ah, home renovation. It’s something that really never ends. So this is where I keep track of current projects and the never-ending to-do list.
Auto Maintenance
Here’s where we track all of the maintenance and repairs done to our cars. Having an easy to access list is far easier than digging through a file trying to find the right information.
Book Inventory
So.. I haven’t actually filled out this tab yet but I fully intend to. For a couple of book lovers like us, it’s a job that will take awhile. BUT – I know I’ll be glad when it’s done.
I remember my mom typing out a list of all the books we owned. We homeschooled, so the list was super long. It was nice to have, though!
DVD Inventory
Finally, the tab to track the DVDs. We don’t have a whole lot, so this tab will be a little easier than the book one 🙂
So there you have it.. The process I use to simplify my homemaking by keeping a spreadsheet instead of a binder. You can walk through and create your own. Or, I have a blank copy of my spreadsheet available in my shop.
EIther way, I think you can greatly simplify your homemaking with an easy to reference spreadsheet!

It’s so important to find a system that works wonders for your life as a homemaker! I’ve never done a notebook, preferring pen and paper, with our budgeting info on the computer. This would be great for those that like lots of lists, though! 🙂
