Perfectionism. Fear. Conflict. Stress. Exhaustion.

Do any of these words come to mind when you think of the holidays? It’s actually quite common and I personally have not been a stranger to all of them. For some, the holidays are well known as not always being “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

But where is our focus? And who said Christmas has to be complicated? Sometimes simple is better.

Practical Ways to Simplify Christmas

I want to focus on the real reason we celebrate – the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. I want to simplify Christmas, show the spirit of giving, and embrace the time I get to spend together with my extended family.

However, that’s easier said than done when gifts need bought and wrapped, menus need planned, and there’s just too. much. to. do. What are some practical ways to take a step back and have a simpler, more relaxed time? Here are a few ways:

Simplify your list

What really needs done and what isn’t that important? Do we really need that last box of decorations put up? How many kinds of cookies do you really need to bake this year? Take a good, hard look and be honest with yourself about what you can truly manage without getting burned out.

Go with a theme or insist on gift ideas

This will take some of the stress out of the Christmas shopping. Finding great gifts for everyone is usually one of my biggest stressors this time of year. But this year I’m doing better about insisting on ideas. I’d rather buy someone something they truly want or need than trying to guess!

Put up fewer decorations

If you dread dragging boxes and boxes of Christmas supplies out – don’t! Pick your favorites and just decorate with those this year. You can always switch it up next year and rotate through others. Or, if you find yourself not using or enjoying certain items – sell or donate them. Less clutter that way!

Don’t Bake as Much

As much as I love baking and eating Christmas treats, I know with my current schedule it just isn’t realistic to make everything I used to. But that’s ok. We will pick out our favorites and just go with those for this year. Plus perhaps a couple things that will double as gifts.

Let go of perfectionism

I think this is a major key to truly enjoying the holidays! Things don’t have to be perfect. Do what you can and just have fun together. Think of it this way: Would you rather have everyone frazzled and irritable while sitting down to eat a big fancy Christmas dinner or be eating pizza and have everyone laughing and enjoying themselves? Personally, I’d pick the latter.

I truly hope this has encouraged you to take a look at your December schedule and decide where to place your priorities and where to cut back. You don’t have to do it all! And remember, it doesn’t have to be complicated to be special. Let go of perfectionism and enjoy a simple Christmas making memories with your family and friends.
