Growing up, my mom started a Christmas tradition that my brother and I loved. Every year we looked forward to this advent tradition and I hope to pass it on to any future children of my own.
Our tradition was to be given a Christmas book to read every day in December leading up to Christmas. Books were re-used every year, but we usually forgot about most of them and were surprised when we opened them. We frequented library sales and between the books we had collected since we were little, there were enough books for us both.
My mom always wrapped the books, but there are lots of other ways you could do it too. For example, they could show up in a special basket each morning, or the kids could have to find them hidden somewhere in the house.
Both my brother and I had certain favorite books, though, and were given those books. After we opened them, we all read them together. I remember that on Christmas Eve, the books were always “The Night Before Christmas” that we read at bedtime, along with Luke chapter 2 for the story of Christ’s birth.
It was a fun surprise each day and created some wonderful family time memories reading together.
What are your favorite Christmas traditions?
