If you’re looking for a fun, free (or cheap) way to have some quality family time, why not have a family game night? We played lots of games in the evening after dinner growing up and it provided awesome memories and fun times together. Here are just a few of our favorite games.
Apples to Apples
This one can get crazy depending on how you play.. from closest match to most ridiculous. It’s so much fun and always includes lots of laughter.
Sorry
Sorry was another game we played a lot, with the goal being to get around the board and into your “home” and not be sent back to start by another player.
Blokus
I think this is my personal favorite. It’s a strategy game consisting of fitting as many different shaped pieces as you can on the game board. Your own pieces can only touch each other on corners. It’s a challenge to make them all fit!
Uno
We have some well-worn Uno cards from years of playing this game. I also remember we had a the Uno Attack version where instead of drawing, you pressed a button for a chance to have a bunch of cards spit out at you! This game is a lot of fun and one we still like to play.
Other Card Games
I remember hours spent playing games with a regular set of cards. My brother and I played many games of “War” and “Slap Jack.” A family favorite we played all together was called “Blitz,” which is also known as “31.
Then there are of course other classics like Yahtzee, Life, Monopoly, Clue and Scrabble.
If you have younger kids, Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders are fun, cute games.
No matter which game you choose to play, family game night can be such a great way to connect and have fun together without screen time. We always ended up with lots of fun memories from playing games together.

My son loves Blokus, such a great game for developing minds.
Yes, it’s an awesome game! I think that is my absolute favorite.
I absolutely love this post. My oldest is starting to get into board games (Hungry Hippos, Memory, etc.) and I couldn’t be more excited. Pinning!
Aw I remember those games too! Thanks for stopping by and pinning!
LOVE Sorry my daughter and I play it at least once a month if not more and we are ruthless. Always out to kill the other some how. Have not heard of Blokus will have to check it out.
Haha I think Sorry was my brother’s favorite too! Let me know how you like Blokus if you try it, it takes strategy but it’s so much fun. Thanks for visiting!
Great list of games! We play all of these in my family except Apples to Apples. We have it sitting on the shelf waiting for my son to learn to read 🙂 I used to work at a store that sold tons of games, and I LOVE the family game night concept. Such great bonding!
Game night is a big thing for my family. Thanks for the list!
Ahhh thank you for the GREAT reminder. We are a large family and we LOVE having game night. It has been a while. Time to drag out the Apples to Apples and Uno. 🙂 LOVE this post. Bookmarking your page.
It hadn’t even occurred to me to change the goal of an Apples to Apples turn!
My son and I are always playing games before he goes to sleep. He is 4 and he prefers the games where he needs to think which is very good for his development. Very interesting games here, thanks!
Good LIst! Thanks! 🙂
We have been big fans of sorry. A new game that we have started playing is called Greedy. It’s a dice game that encourages math.
We love to play Apples to Apples with our kids. It always makes us laugh. Jenga is a fun one too. Great list!
My kids love game night! I have always enjoyed games myself, and I could never get my parents and brothers to play with me as a kid. I look forward to the day that our family game nights are a little more sophisticated than Old Maid and Chutes and Ladders…but for now I am enjoying the laughter and joy that our simple game nights bring to my children.
My son loves playing board games! His current favorite is a newer one – Ticket to Ride. I have to admit it’s a lot of fun and a nice change of pace.
I’ll have to check that one out! Thanks for visiting 🙂
These are all great games. We have many of them. We have gotten in the habit of movie night lately. You have inspired me to focus on games more!
UNO, although an old game, is still a favorite at our house 😉
